Job Description
American Science and Technology Corporation (AST), a rapidly growing
diverse business, is seeking a fuel cell engineer with design and testing
experience to work on the development of various fuel cell products (e.g.,
sensors).
The fuel cell engineer will be a key member of AST’s technical, product
development and marketing team. This individual will collaborate with principal
investigators, vendors and suppliers to resolve technical issues or concerns
related to the R&D processes of fuel cell products. In addition, the successful
candidate will provide engineering support for the marketing team to develop
strategies to enter emerging alternative energy markets.

Roles and Responsibilities
- Design R&D processes for fuel cell products (e.g., sensors)
- Design PEM or DMFC fuel cell stack, packaging and integration
- Perform PEM or DMFC fuel cell system analysis, simulation and integration
- Develop testing methodologies for fuel cell products
- Provide technical support to the marketing team
- Direct technician (s) to gather test data of various fuel cell products
- Collaborate with principal investigators and other professionals as required
Qualifications, Requirements and Skills
- Experienced in fuel cell testing and product applications development
- Experienced in developing and implementing fuel cell R&D best practices
- Experienced in building and testing multiple fuel cell stacks
- Project management skills related to fuel cell R&D processes
- Understand emerging fuel cell technologies (i.e., applied R&D, and micro fuel
cells applications)
- Understand basic fuel cell R&D processes Understand basic low and high
temperature PEM performance characteristics
- Understand lean manufacturing, six sigma and statistical process control
techniques & tools
- Understand ISO 9001:2000 Quality Methodologies and Practices
- Demonstrated knowledge of the fuel cell industry (i.e., cells, best practices,
competitive benchmarking, research & development, and manufacturing)
- Familiar with simulation and modeling software applications
- Ability to use engineering reference materials, textbooks, journals to locate
the equations used to analyze problems using basic software applications (e.g.
EXCEL)
- Write reports and present findings at meetings with internal and external
customers
- Understand basic conductive and convective heat transfer concepts and related
engineering formulae
- Ability to work with blowers, compressors, mass flow controllers, valves,
pipe, fittings.
- Also, able to design fluid delivery systems for pressure drop, flow by
integrating blower and system curves.
- Ability to research the appropriate thermodynamic formulae that apply
application to: efficiency, ideal gas law, specific heat, work and energy
- Have hands-on plant experience in testing, manufacturing and/or quality
assurance
- Ability to create CAD drawings using AutoCAD or Solid Works software
application
- Education Level: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical
engineering technology. Advanced degree preferred
- Employment Requirements: US citizen or permanent residence (green card holder)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong team player skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project,
Visio, Outlook, and Access database)

- Understand lean manufacturing, six sigma and statistical process control
techniques & tools

- Apply manufacturing best practices to improve product efficiencies
- Demonstrated knowledge of the solar industry (i.e., cells, modules, ink jet
printing, thin –films research and development, amorphous silicon photovoltaic
module manufacturing, and flexible plastic substrates)
